Odyssey White Hot vs Tri-Hot vs Ai-One: Which Insert Is Right for You?

Golf Club Brokers ·

Odyssey makes more putter lines than any other brand. White Hot OG. Ai-ONE. Ai-ONE Milled. Tri-Hot 5K. S2S Tri-Hot. Ai-DUAL. DFX. Toulon. If you're standing in a golf shop trying to figure out the difference between all of these, you're not alone. We get asked about Odyssey insert technology more than almost any other equipment question at Golf Club Brokers.

Here's the thing: Odyssey has been the #1 putter brand on tour for 25 years. They've earned that by constantly iterating on insert technology. Each generation builds on the last. But for consumers, the sheer number of options creates confusion. Which insert is actually best? And is the new Ai-DUAL worth the premium over a White Hot OG?

Let's sort it out.

TL;DR: White Hot OG = classic soft urethane feel, no AI, great value (~$170–200). Ai-ONE = AI-designed aluminum + urethane insert, more consistent ball speed on mishits (~$300). Ai-ONE Milled = same AI topology but CNC milled from titanium, premium feel (~$400+). Tri-Hot 5K = multi-material blade putters with 5,000+ MOI. S2S Tri-Hot = zero-torque putters with forward CG and Ai-DUAL insert. Ai-DUAL (2026) = latest evolution, dual-layer urethane, improved forward roll. For most golfers: Ai-ONE offers the best performance-for-money. For feel purists: White Hot OG or Ai-ONE Milled. For zero-torque curious: S2S Tri-Hot. On the used market: Ai-ONE models at $150–200 are outstanding value.

The Insert Comparison: What Each One Does

Ai-ONE Milled 100% titanium, CNC milled Yes Same AI topology as Ai-ONE but milled for premium feel. Firmer, more feedback than cast version. Ai-ONE Milled family (2024). ~$400+
Ai-DUAL Dual-layer urethane (soft outer, firm inner) Yes Evolution of Ai-ONE. No metal component. Improved forward roll via 19° FRD grooves. Softer feel with more ball speed consistency. Ai-DUAL line (2026), S2S Tri-Hot (2025–26)
Tri-Hot 5K (insert) White Hot urethane in multi-material blade heads No Not a unique insert — the innovation is the multi-material head (steel + tungsten + aluminum) achieving 5,000+ MOI in a blade shape. Tri-Hot 5K blade line (2022–23)

White Hot OG: The Classic

Let's start with the icon. White Hot has been Odyssey's signature insert since the early 2000s. It's a urethane material that produces a soft, consistent feel at impact. No AI. No aluminum. Just urethane doing what it does.

The White Hot OG line (re-released and still current) offers classic Odyssey head shapes with the original White Hot insert and Stroke Lab shaft technology. At ~$170–200 new, it's the most affordable current Odyssey putter with the genuine White Hot feel. On the used market, White Hot OG models are available for $60–120.

Who it's for: golfers who love the classic White Hot feel and don't need AI-level ball speed consistency. If you putt well with feel and touch, White Hot has been working for two decades and it hasn't stopped.

Ai-ONE: The Performance Upgrade

Ai-ONE was Odyssey's big move in 2024. The insert uses an aluminum face backed by White Hot urethane, with the face thickness contoured by artificial intelligence. The AI analyzed impact patterns and designed variable thickness zones that normalize ball speed across the face — meaning mishits travel closer to the same distance as center strikes.

Odyssey claims off-center impacts finish 21% closer to the hole on average. We can't independently verify that exact number, but we can say the Ai-ONE feel is noticeably more consistent on mishits than White Hot OG. The slightly firmer aluminum face produces a livelier feel with more feedback than pure urethane.

The Ai-ONE also introduced updated Stroke Lab technology — a 90g steel shaft with 20–30g of counterbalance in the butt end (depending on grip), plus interchangeable sole weights for head weight customization. Jon Rahm put the Ai-ONE Rossie in play at the 2023 Ryder Cup and hasn't taken it out since.

Who it's for: the best value in Odyssey's current lineup for golfers who want measurably better distance control on mishits. At ~$300 new and $150–200 used, the Ai-ONE is where performance and price intersect.

Ai-ONE Milled: The Premium Feel

Same AI-designed topology as the Ai-ONE, but CNC milled from 100% titanium rather than cast aluminum + urethane. The result is a firmer, more precise feel with more feedback through the hands. If you're a golfer who wants to feel where you hit it on the face, the Milled version delivers that in a way the cast Ai-ONE doesn't.

At ~$400+, it competes with Scotty Cameron on price. The feel is different — not better or worse, just different. Cameron's milled stainless is firmer and more metallic; Odyssey's milled titanium is slightly softer with more give. It's purely preference.

Who it's for: feel-first golfers who want AI performance in a premium milled package and are willing to pay Cameron-level pricing for it.

Ai-DUAL: The 2026 Evolution

The newest insert. Ai-DUAL drops the aluminum component entirely and uses a dual-layer urethane construction — softer outer layer for feel, firmer inner layer for speed consistency. AI contours the thickness of both layers across the face. New Forward Roll Design (FRD) grooves at 19° promote quicker forward roll off the face, reducing skid and bounce.

Tour feedback drove this change. Some players stuck with older Microhinge inserts because Ai-ONE didn't roll as crisply. Ai-DUAL was designed to marry Ai-ONE's ball speed consistency with Microhinge's crisp roll quality. Early reviews call it the best Odyssey insert ever.

The Ai-DUAL appears in both the new 2026 conventional Ai-DUAL line and the S2S Tri-Hot zero-torque models.

Who it's for: golfers buying new in 2026 who want the latest Odyssey technology. If you're choosing between Ai-ONE and Ai-DUAL, the DUAL has better roll characteristics. If you're choosing between Ai-DUAL and White Hot OG, you're paying for measurably better speed consistency on off-center putts.

Tri-Hot 5K and S2S Tri-Hot: The Forgiveness and Zero-Torque Stories

These two share a name but serve different purposes:

Tri-Hot 5K (2022–23)

Tri-Hot 5K was about forgiveness in a blade shape. Multi-material construction (steel, tungsten, aluminum) pushed blade MOI above 5,000 — normally mallet territory. Uses White Hot insert. Discontinued but available used.

S2S Tri-Hot (2025–26)

S2S Tri-Hot is about zero-torque putting. Same multi-material philosophy but applied to move the CG forward so the shaft can enter the topline like a conventional center-shaft putter — eliminating the forward shaft lean that's the #1 complaint about zero-torque putters. Uses the Ai-DUAL insert. Red-and-black colorway.

Zero-torque putters have surged to about 33% of the putter market. The S2S Tri-Hot is Odyssey's answer for golfers who are "zero-torque curious" but didn't like the look or feel of earlier designs.

On the Used Market: Where Each Insert Sits

Odyssey putters hold value well but depreciate enough to create strong used-market opportunities:

  • White Hot OG — $60–120 used. Outstanding value. Iconic feel. Smart budget buy.
  • Ai-ONE — $150–200 used. Best performance-per-dollar on the used market. AI speed consistency at a fraction of new pricing. These are flooding the used market as golfers upgrade to Ai-DUAL.
  • Ai-ONE Milled — $250–350 used. Premium milled titanium at a significant discount from new.
  • Tri-Hot 5K — $100–180 used. High-MOI blade at value pricing. Great for golfers who want blade aesthetics with mallet forgiveness.
  • DFX — $40–80 used. Softest, most budget-friendly Odyssey insert. Entry-level option.

Every one of these inserts works. Putters don't wear out. A used Ai-ONE from 2024 performs identically to a new one. The used Odyssey market is one of the best values in golf equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ai-DUAL better than the Ai-ONE?

The Ai-DUAL has improved forward roll characteristics thanks to its dual-layer urethane and new FRD grooves. Ball speed consistency is comparable. The feel is slightly softer because there's no aluminum in the insert. If roll quality matters to you, the Ai-DUAL is a meaningful upgrade. If you're happy with your Ai-ONE's performance, the improvement is incremental.

Should I choose White Hot OG or Ai-ONE?

Ai-ONE delivers measurably better speed consistency on off-center putts. White Hot OG feels slightly softer and more "classic." If you putt primarily with feel and rarely miss the center, White Hot OG is all you need. If three-putts from distance are your problem (and they're everyone's problem), Ai-ONE's speed consistency helps.

What's the difference between Ai-ONE and Ai-ONE Milled?

Construction and feel. Ai-ONE is cast aluminum + urethane. Ai-ONE Milled is CNC milled titanium. The Milled version feels firmer with more feedback. The AI face topology is conceptually the same. Price is the biggest difference: ~$300 vs ~$400+.

Are Odyssey inserts better than Scotty Cameron's milled face?

Different, not objectively better. Scotty Cameron putters don't use inserts — they're milled from solid stainless steel. That produces a firmer, more metallic feel with maximum feedback. Odyssey inserts produce a softer feel with less sting on mishits. On off-center strikes, Odyssey's AI inserts are more forgiving on speed consistency. Cameron's milled face gives more honest feedback. It's a legitimate preference choice.

What's a zero-torque putter and do I need one?

A zero-torque putter keeps the face square throughout the stroke regardless of your stroke path. The shaft enters at the CG so there's no rotation. They work best for golfers with inconsistent face angles at impact. The S2S Tri-Hot is Odyssey's entry in this growing category. If you frequently miss putts left or right and your stroke is relatively straight, a zero-torque putter is worth testing. About 33% of the putter market is now zero-torque.

Which Odyssey putter does Jon Rahm use?

Jon Rahm plays the Odyssey Ai-ONE Rossie with a double-bend hosel. He put it in play at the 2023 Ryder Cup and has kept it in the bag since. The Rossie is a mid-mallet shape with moderate forgiveness and good alignment.
